Insurance Considerations for NEMT Companies

Insurance is one of the most frequently misunderstood considerations when starting or growing a Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) business. While coverage is often viewed as a checkbox to operate, the type of policy — and who structures it — can significantly impact long-term risk.

Industry-Specific Knowledge Matters

A common consideration for NEMT providers is who they work with for insurance. Local insurance agents or brokers who are unfamiliar with the NEMT industry may offer inexpensive quotes, but those policies often do not adequately cover wheelchair or stretcher transportation, patient handling, or loading and unloading exposure.

A lower premium may look appealing upfront, but gaps in coverage usually surface only after a claim occurs.

Commercial Auto & General Liability

Commercial auto and general liability policies for NEMT companies are influenced by vehicle type, passenger assistance, service area, and contract requirements. Brokers who do not understand NEMT operations may overlook critical endorsements or exclusions that are specific to this industry.

Many providers consider whether their broker understands:

  • Wheelchair and stretcher transportation risks

  • Patient interaction and transfer exposure

  • Facility and payer insurance requirements

  • Coverage considerations as vehicles are added
